Pre-colonial and Modern Artisanal Small-scale Mining in Ghana. (Department of History Research)

Artisanal small-scale mining has been practiced in Ghana for centuries and it formed the basis of wealth in the Akan, Lobi and Gonja kingdoms during the pre-colonial and colonial times and more recently, it has become a staple economic activity in Ghana. Although it is not known when gold mining began in Ghana, it is certain that the local inhabitants had a sound knowledge of artisanal gold processing prior to the arrival of the Europeans. This research reviewed the continuities and transformation within artisanal gold mining in Ghana. The study relied on historiographical approach that combines the use of primary and secondary sources of data in a complimentary manner supplemented by oral data collected through field work.
